Many would argue the ill effects tourism can have on natural habitats and the animals themselves but the major argument for positive tourism is sustainable tourism – sharing the benefits of wildlife and socioeconomic development through the promotion of tourism. The objective of those working in the African travel industry should be to bring about sustainable economic development by way of eco-tourism, which is said to be the fastest growing industry in the world! Poverty and ineffective land use can be addressed with the help of tourism opportunities like African safaris, adventure holidays and fair trade travel.

Contrary to popular belief poverty in rural Africa is caused by lack of education, massive unemployment problems (due to large masses of land and the remoteness of many areas) and the limited options for the profitable use of such land. Sustainable projects and private commercial ventures that provide adventure holidays have economic potential through eco-tourism because they make use of the natural resources an area has in a way that benefits the local population without depleting those same natural resources.

Without such forward thinking approaches local people in and around remote areas have few alternatives but to exhaust the very resources (animals, land and natural beauty) on which their survival depends. Eco-tourism can be seen to protect the world's natural assets by emphasising their value to visitors and locals alike.

The establishment of 'peace parks' like the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier conservation area aim to correct this past century but significant injustice by building on neighbouring relationships and encouraging improvements to natural habitats, wildlife and people through the joint management of these resources. The Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier will become the worlds largest conservation area straddling Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe upon the completion of the project in 2010.

Eco-tourism and the development of 'peace parks' are an up and coming standard that African Governments (including Zambias) are using to create a sense of harmony between humankind (both foreign and local) and nature by using the lands natural resources to create prosperity. The beneficiaries are:

visitors who leave more knowledgeable and with a positive and authentic African experience,
local people who benefit from job creation and the development of schools and clinics,
and also business owners who work sustainably and profitably.

All these factors lead to economic stability and since stability is seen to be the cornerstone of peace, when all benefit and development is sustainable, peace prevails, hence the name 'peace parks'.

It seems as though nice cars have been put on the back burner while small, cheap cars take their place. There's nothing wrong with small cheap cars, but there is something wrong with taking away the nice cars.

Lincoln seems to have a solution to this. They call it the “C” Concept. It's a completely green luxury car with the capacity to change how we think about automobiles – and is downright cool.

The “C” gets its styling from the ever-so-popular box car design, but Lincoln has rounded it off quite a bit. On the exterior one might say that a VW New Beetle and a Chrysler PT Cruiser ran into a Lincoln Navigator and formed what we see as the “C”. On the interior, the Bladerunner-esque ergonomic seats make you want to take a nap while the panoramic instrument panel invites you back to the future. While you're marveling at the design the “C” senses your presence and greets you with a customizable avatar that proceeds to go over your schedule with you and alerts you to any e-mails or text messages that you've received.

Assuming you've cleaned up the mess you've made while you were drooling and decided to take the 1.6L EcoBoost powered vehicle for an environmentally friendly spin you'll probably notice that your “C” winks at other “C”s that it comes across on the road. Just a little flash from the headlight closest to the other “C”.

Here's something for the audiophiles. Fingertip controls for GPS Navigation, Satellite Radio, MP3 Players, and Social Networking. Lincoln has yet to define social networking in this respect, but it will be interesting none the less.

Hopefully this will be one car we'll be “C”ing a lot of in the future.

Thousands of skiers and boarders choose to make their journey to the heart of the slopes this way every season. Rail Europe’s Snow Trainis an overnight sleeper service from London St Pancras and Ebbsfleet International, Kent, to a number of skiing destinations in the French Alps. There is a specially designated sound-proofed disco carriage, so you can party all night, or if you’d rather save your energy for the slopes, there is comfortable, flat-bed sleeping accommodation. In many cases, ski train journeys are similar in length to flying. Remember, by train there’s no two-hour check-in time, fewer delays and (on most trains) no long transfers to your resort. Plus, most independent research says that travelling to the slopes by train produces a relatively small carbon footprint compared to flying or going by car. Green Luxury Vehicles Are Making the Grade with the Eco-Conscious Affluent Crowd

Greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks like SUVs, account for nearly 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the USA. This 20% of emissions contributes substantially to climate changes, air pollution, and disease. When taking assessment of how to lighten your environmental footprint, one of the first things to consider is your vehicle.

Every day, affluent people are making changes in their luxury diets that take into consideration their choices and the affects those choices have on our planet.
This good news is that people seem to be using their affluence for the greater good by contributing in the way they know best: Large scale consumerism of luxury products that focus on eco-conscious materials and production practices.

Young and old A-listers alike are now very conscious of their every day choices that impact our planet. While maintaining their luxury lifestyles, they choose to lesson their carbon footprint and live in green luxury rather than wasteful excess. Currently, the most common green vehicle among celebrities is the Toyota Prius. A-listers like, Leo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Joel, Jack Black, Alicia Silverstone and America Ferrera, just to name a few, all own and drive their Prius around town every day. Truly, the list goes on to include probably hundreds of celebrities. In 2007, the Prius won the Intellichoice award for Best Overall Value, Lowest Fuel Costs, Lowest Ownership Costs, Best Retained Value and Lowest Operating Costs.

Another car gaining popularity for the SUV loving crowd is the GMC Yukon. You can see Paris Hilton and Matthew McConaughey driving around town in their luxury green SUV. GMC Yukon is the first full-size hybrid SUV and will surely get more recognition as celebrities go green and want to maintain luxury. Many of this year’s Oscar attendees made big statements to go green by driving up in the GMC Yukon Hybrid, the Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell or the FlexFuel E85 ethanol-compatible GMC Yukon.

Today, and certainly expanding into the future, cars that transport celebrities will also be required to meet eco-friendly standards. Recently, New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg stated that the Taxi and Limousine Commission would soon be required to increase fuel efficiency standards to meet or exceed that which is currently only available with hybrid technology.

Aside from hybrids, keep your eye on bio-diesel fuels. Musicians are making a move to use bio-diesel fuels in their vehicles. Artists like, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Bonnie Riatt and Melissa Etheridge have all made profound statements in this regard. Bio-deisel fuel is a clean, domestic, veggie-based, carbon-neutral fuel that will run in any diesel car or truck with little or no modification to the engine.
